It’s not every day you come across a BMW that’s so breathtakingly beautiful that even non-BMW enthusiasts would find themselves captivated. The BMW E9 is one such car—a true design masterpiece that feels ahead of its time, even decades later. Its timeless curves and commanding presence are a testament to the visionary brilliance of BMW designers during its creation.

In the past year, we’ve been fortunate enough to photograph two remarkable BMW E9s. While one was a race-inspired replica owned by our friend George (which you can read about here), today’s focus is on a more understated yet equally stunning example. This build, owned by Alex Steff from Germany, reflects a philosophy of “less is more,” proving that subtlety can be just as striking as extravagance.

A Journey to Discover Timeless Design with Alex Steff and His SuperFly Slammed BMW E9

A Passion Born From Two Wheels

Alex's journey into the automotive world began at the age of 15.  Like many enthusiasts, he started small, modifying 50cc and 125cc bikes with the goal of making them faster. “I modified the bikes a lot, as they had simple two-stroke engines, and I would try my best to make them as fast as possible,” he recalls.

His passion for vehicles eventually led to his first car—a 1997 MK4 VW Golf. True to form, Alex couldn’t resist making it his own, equipping it with an R-Line body kit, lowered suspension, and 18-inch wheels—all before even passing his driving test.

Crafting a Retro Masterpiece

Restoring the E9 was no small feat. Alex began by stripping the body down to bare metal—a painstaking process that required significant time, money, and patience. Once the bodywork was perfected, he sourced chrome parts directly from BMW and even managed to track down a rare 2000CS bumper and a CSL front spoiler to enhance the car’s classic aesthetic.

The transformation didn’t stop there. Inside, the worn-out interior was given a luxurious overhaul in vibrant red Nappa leather. The striking contrast between the deep black exterior and the bold red interior creates a visual harmony that pays homage to the car’s retro roots while adding a touch of modern sophistication.

For the finishing touch, Alex turned to BBS for wheels that would perfectly complement the car’s sleek lines. He opted for 18-inch RC061 and RC062 wheels, pairing them with Pirelli P-Zero tyres. To achieve the ultimate stance, the E9 was lowered on TA Technix air ride suspension—a fitting upgrade that adds to the car’s show-stopping presence.

Alex Steff's 1971 BMW E9:

  • Model: 1971 BMW E9 (3.0 CS)

  • Engine: 3.0-litre inline-six M30 with Schmiedmann headers, custom stainless steel exhaust, Wiechers strut brace; planned upgrade to 3.5-litre injection with Schrick camshaft.

  • Wheels & Tyres: 18" BBS RC061 & RC062 with modified emblems, Pirelli P-Zero tyres.

  • Suspension: TA Technix Air Ride Suspension.

  • Exterior: CSL front spoiler, all chrome parts refinished in black, 2000CS rear bumper.

  • Interior: Red Nappa leather upholstery, Alpina steering wheel, Alpina shift knob.

But it was a chance encounter at a petrol station that set him on the path to owning his dream car. Alex spotted a BMW E9 and was instantly hooked. “I didn’t have enough money to buy one at the time, so I stayed in the VAG scene and started restoring a MK1 VW Golf with my best friend, Waldi Peters.”

After selling the MK1 and saving up, Alex’s dream finally became a reality. He found his BMW E9, an Italian import, about 200 kilometres from his home. While the car’s chassis was in solid condition, the paintwork and interior left much to be desired for. Undeterred, Alex saw its potential and knew he had indeed found the perfect project car.

A Labour of Love

Since acquiring the car in 2016, Alexandre has poured countless hours into its restoration. Despite its already impeccable appearance, the E9 remains a work in progress. Next on the list is an engine swap, which will see the current 3.0-litre M30 engine replaced with a 3.5-litre injection system featuring a Schrick camshaft.

This journey wouldn’t have been possible without the unwavering support of Alexandre’s best friend, Waldi, and his father, who encouraged him to follow his dream. Their combined efforts have resulted in a car that’s not just a vehicle but a rolling work of art—a true retro classic that embodies the spirit of SuperFly Autos.

For Alex, the E9 represents more than just a car—it’s the culmination of years of dedication, creativity, and passion. As he continues to refine and enhance this stunning BMW, one thing is certain: this is a build that will be admired and remembered for years to come. SuperFly Autos salutes Alex & Waldi, and everyone involved in bringing this retro masterpiece to life.
